The Coalhouse
The warehouse's old coal store: a brick room with its own door off 27th Street, its own hearth, and one table that seats 22. It is the only private room we have, and the only one we want.
The room
What it is
When the building stored plumbing supply, this room stored the coal that heated it — the brick still carries the soot stain, sealed in, because scrubbing out the room's whole biography seemed wrong. It holds one long table for up to 22, its own hearth, its own door, and enough separation from the dining room that a toast does not have to compete with 38 other dinners. You control the music. There is no screen and no projector; it is a dinner table, not a conference room, and every group that has asked us to keep it that way has been right.
The numbers
What it costs
Minimum spend is $3,500 Tuesday to Thursday and $5,000 on Friday and Saturday, before tax and the 4% kitchen equity charge. There is no room fee — every dollar of the minimum goes to food and wine. Most groups take the set menu at $110 a head, served family style from the wood oven, with wine chosen with Elliot Ferris beforehand or off the list on the night; à la carte from the dinner menu works too. The Coalhouse runs on its own clock: while the dining room seats once at six, your table can sit at 5:30, 6:00 or 6:30.
The process
What happens after you write
Sam Oyelaran reads every enquiry and replies within one business day with availability, a sample menu and straight answers. If the date works, they hold it for five days while you decide. A $500 deposit confirms the booking and comes off the final bill; the balance is settled on the night. Menus are fixed a week out, allergies are handled the way the kitchen page promises, and a buyout of the whole building, the room and the Ember Bar and all of it, is a real option: choose Buyout below and say so.
